FAQs

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science-based approach that focuses on understanding how environments and experiences influence behavior and learning. At Heartshine, ABA means teaching meaningful skills, supporting communication, and improving everyday independence in a respectful, neurodiversity-affirming way. We prioritize assent, dignity, and individualized care—helping each child grow through compassion, collaboration, and evidence-based strategies.

  • In-home ABA therapy brings individualized behavior support directly into your home, allowing your child to learn skills in their natural environment with real-life routines and tools. An RBT will come in home to work with your child on a regular schedule, with oversight and training done by our BCBA.

  • Clinic-based ABA is structured and controlled, while in-home ABA focuses on daily life, natural routines, and family involvement. Many children thrive with the comfort and predictability of home-based care.

  • A trained Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) delivers 1:1 therapy, and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) oversees assessment, program design, and ongoing supervision training and support. Sometimes our Bernedoodle Therapy Dog will join in for sessions for support, too!

  • Hours depend on an initial assessment but typically range from 20–40 hours per week for comprehensive support.

  • Sessions include learning through play, communication practice, behavior support, and skill-based teaching woven naturally into your child’s daily routines.

  • Most insurance providers cover ABA with an autism diagnosis, though policies vary. We help families navigate benefits and eligibility.

  • A caregiver must be present in the home for safety, but you don't need to participate the entire time. However, your engagement during parent training is key to long-term success.

  • We use ethical, assent-based, and neurodiversity-affirming strategies to prioritize safety, communication, and dignity while teaching healthier, more empowering skills.

  • Progress varies by child, goals, and consistency of sessions. Many families notice positive changes in communication, behavior, or routines within a few weeks.

  • A therapy dog is a specially trained, friendly, and calm dog who helps bring comfort, confidence, and connection to the people they work with. At Heartshine, our therapy dog joins sessions and social skills groups to help clients feel more relaxed, build emotional regulation skills, and make learning more fun. They’re not service dogs—they’re here to offer encouragement, gentle support, and a little extra joy during each visit.

  • Getting started is simple! Follow this link and click the “Request Services” button in the top right corner. From there, you’ll be connected with our partner team at Headstart Health, who will guide you through the insurance process. They’ll verify your benefits, submit everything to insurance, and provide your family with a good faith estimate before any services begin.

Once you approve and feel comfortable moving forward, we’ll schedule an initial evaluation, which typically takes 2–4 hours. After the evaluation, your BCBA will submit the report to insurance, and services can begin within 4–6 weeks. We’ll be with you every step of the way to make the process as smooth and supportive as possible
